A short hop on a long trip.

I started a scrappy trip along precisely to have a go-to between other projects- especially a go to that is simple (I’m using Bonnie at Quiltville’s excellent tutorial, the only difference is my strips are 2″ wide, because I had a ton already cut that size). So, I’m between projects right now… and I got it back out last week.

I’m up to 36 blocks now. Not bad for a project I barely touch. I’m pretty certain that this barn raising style layout will be my final choice. This one is ALSO destined for our bed, so I need it to be 10×10 blocks to get it to size.

By the end of this year, I’d like to have 3 new quilts for our bed. My goal was always to have 4 to rotate between (seasonally?), and we were at 3. But then there was the great bleach incident that is too painful to talk about, and we were back to 2. I love them both, but I get bored. One is also a wee bit narrower than I would like- I so wish I’d added ANOTHER extra row when I made it. You can check it out on my old blog. No wonder I’m bored with my bed quilts- looks like they both date back to 2007! When this one is done, I will have a total of 5 to choose from. The 2 current options, the modern cross that’s being quilted right now, the city sampler, and then this. Not too shabby!

Still Trippin’

Back in May, I started making some Scrappy Tripalong blocks. Because I’m nothing if not late to the party. (See also: my catvent, my plus quilt.) I’m not feeling rushed to get them done. I realized they’d become my backup project- ready to go when I’m between other projects, or not able to pay tons of attention (they are pretty simple blocks to make…) I thought my pile of leftover scraps from my Modern Cross quilt was huge, but in fact I had barely gotten started when I ran out of green strips, and then blue ones.

That’s where I left you… 11 blocks, and in need of more strips. So, I spent a few nights watching True Detective while pulling apart my stash for blues, greens, and purples to cut into strips.

When I had a huge pile good and ready to go, I got back to making blocks.

I picking the fabrics for each one of these to be so much fun. Each one is a complete story all by itself, and then they end up all jumbled together.

And they tell an even bigger story. There are pieces of so many previous projects in these blocks. So many fabric based memories. And some things to make you laugh, too…

Like this one.

IMG_9544 IMG_9549Years and years ago, I got THAT fabric at a quilting expo. I got two FQs, one in purple and one in white. I have had so much fun sneaking them into projects over the years. Because apparently I have the sense of humor of a 10 year old boy… Hee hee hee.

I’m up to 30 blocks now. It seems like it should be more, but that’s it. I have decided to make this a queen+ quilt, to top our bed. So that means I need 70 more of these. Yikes! At least I’ve gotten far enough that I can start to play with layout ideas.

Like this.

And there are so very many other layouts that could be possible. Good thing I have 70 blocks and probably many months to go before I have to decide on one…

Tripping Out

For ages and ages and ages, as I cut 2″ strips for my Epic Modern Crosses quilt, I put aside the leftover bits thinking, I’ll have to find just the right project for these guys. They were all my favorite colors and fabrics, with so many fun little bits thrown in.

And then a while back (early 2013?), there was a big trend in quilty blog-land to make Scrappy Trip Around the World blocks. I mean, they were EVERYWHERE. They had their own hashtag- #scrappytripalong. I loved them, but I wasn’t in a quilty place just then. And then I realized that I could adapt the 2.5″ strips to 2″ strips with no effort, and use that fabulous pile of leftovers.

But I made myself wait until I finished the Epic top…

Which means… time to make my own Scrappy Trip!

(In case you haven’t made these blocks yet yourself, and you want some great tips, visit i’m a ginger monkey…)

I’ve spent the last few nights blissfully sewing strips into tubes, slicing them up, and sewing them back together. What seemed like a HUGE pile of leftover strips vanished so much more quickly than I anticipated! A few strips were too short and had to go back to the scrap heap. Out of the ones that were left, I had the most purple, which made total sense, as I had twice as many purple blocks in the Epic Modern Cross quilt as blue and green. But I was surprised that I had way more blue than green leftovers- and I made the same number of blue and green blocks. The only thing that I can think is that I used more green fat quarters than yardage, and so, not as many long strips left?

Who knows…

I’m sort of being truly scrappy, with a small plan. Each block has one white strip in the center. Then, each block has 2 purple strips, and they alternate between 1 blue, 2 greens or 2 blues, 1 green. So I guess not truly scrappy at all? I’m bad at scrappy. I made blocks until I ran out of green, and here’s where I ended up:

11 blocks.

I thought my scraps would go further.

Which means I need to make a choice. I really love this pattern, and I’d really like to make it bed size. Which means maybe 100 blocks total, or less if I did a border. And I just finished that massive massive quilt top for my bed. Am I ready to commit to nearly 90 more blocks, and another giant project?

I *think* I am.

I had meant this to be my A Lovely Year of Finishes project, and have all my blocks done by the end of the month, but that was before I realized how BIG this project would be. So what’s a girl to do?
