Sunday Stash: Sewing with my Brony

Now that I’m back to sewing regularly, it seems I’m back to fabric shopping regularly. Going to have to keep an eye on that… It could get both dangerous and expensive…

Meanwhile, since I am doing both more, I thought I’d join up with Sunday Stash for the first time. I’m a little hesitant, as I don’t have quilt shop quality fabric to show you today. BUT, it is fabric that made my kiddo exceptionally happy, so that has to count for something, right?

My Annie (age 12) is obsessed with My Little Pony, in a semi-ironic way. She liked them as a wee one, and rediscovered them last year. She chooses to call herself a Brony, even though she’s not a boy…

Before Xmas, I searched and searched for some My Little Pony fabric, so I could make her something, since her brother was getting this. But I had no luck 😦

And then, we were at JoAnns to replenish her Duck Tape supply, and JoAnns was having one of their massive sales, plus I had a coupon for 20% off my entire purchase. And lo and behold, there it was… My Little Pony licensed fabric. Annie’s head nearly exploded. We got 3 yards, at the very good sale price of 40% off…

On the off chance you don’t know your Ponies, the blue one is Rainbow Dash, the pink one is Pinkie Pie, and the purple one is Princess Twilight Sparkle. Annie’s faves, Muffins, Dr. Whooves, and DJPon3, don’t tend to make it onto the mass market stuff.

The solids are random from my stash. Annie wanted a pony pillowcase, and also one for her BFF. Instead of me making them for her, I helped her make them herself. We passed Sunday morning in the sewing room… I did the rotary cutting but she did everything else by herself.

I’m super proud of her work. And her generosity. She’s keeping the one with blue, and her BFF gets the one with purple. The pillowcase looks right at home on her bed already.

(Oh, did I mention we also bought a bunch of MLP fleece because it was also 40% off?)

Hope you had a fun shopping week. Do you craft with your kiddos?

Finish it Up Friday: January Harmony

A little behind, but here are my January do.Good Stitches Harmony Circle blocks.

January called for wonky stars in cool colors on grey, so, ta-da. As it was all from stash, I have no idea what fabrics I used. I DO know that I used this tutorial from The Silly BooDilly.

Sadly, it looks like February will be the last month I’m in the circle. I’ve asked Rachel to find me a replacement. Life is getting in the way, and etc etc etc… Meanwhile, I’ve got to get to work on the February blocks– aren’t they cool?

What are YOUR sewing plans for the weekend?

WIP Wednesday: The Skull is Surrounded (mostly)

The Skull Quilt is growing!

Last week, it looked like this:

Now, it looks like THIS:

I got 3 of the 4 surrounding rows done. That would have been ALL of the surrounding rows, except that I ran out of the solid greens, and had to go shopping. And by the time I got home, I was out of time to sew 😦

I am SO happy with how this is turning out! I love this quilt already, even before that final row. Hopefully, I can finish the top this week, and baste it over the weekend. Except for the minor problem that I have NO idea what to use for backing. My budget doesn’t really support more shopping, so, time to get creative.

Do you prefer your backs to be all one fabric, or to piece them out of multiple- or to create blocks and design the back completely?

The Inaugural Tula Tuesday- blocks #1 and #2

I recently mentioned to you that some girlfriends and I are doing our own QAL of Tula Pink’s City Sampler. I’ve decided to devote Tuesdays here on the blog to chronicling the progress of this project…

I’m going in order from #1-#100, hoping to do 10 blocks a month from February through November. This weekend, I got the first two done.

I can easily see how these could be addictive. They’re so cute and tiny- they finish at 6″ square. (Just look how big the clothespins holding them up look!) They use itty bitty pieces of fabric- which means I may get to pull some teeny tiny treasures out of my scrap bin. I finished the 2 blocks in around an hour. I do realize that they get harder as you go, so maybe February will end up with 15 blocks and November with 5… or some such. The best thing about doing your own QAL is that you get to set the rules!

Block #1 features the Anna Maria Horner Dowry print that I fell in love with, along with some Tula, and some Lizzy House pearl Bracelets.

Block #2- more of the AMH Dowry, along with some dots and miscellaneous solids. I don’t love the grey right next to the Dowry- I feel like they blend too much. But with 98 blocks ahead of me, I’m not going to sweat it.

Don’t some of those purples look like Radiant Orchid to you? I’m so trendy… But we already knew that, right?

Tune in Tuesdays all year long to see me fill this up…

Baby bliss…

Over the weekend, I was able to pay my first visit to a new little one. And to drop off her gift.

Happily, I think she likes it! Not much feels better than seeing a sweet, sleeping baby under a quilt you made just for her…

(this was the frolleague quilt that I finished just under the wire of 2013…)
